Some Strangest Medical Conditions

Here are some of the most bizarre medical conditions on the planet. They’re tough to live with, but luckily they are very uncommon. The odds of being diagnosed with one of these rare conditions are very slim.
   

1.Nail-Patella Syndrome

Those with Nail-Patella Syndrome (NPS) often have no nails, or nails that grow abnormally, split in half, or simply grow away from the nail bed. Another symptom may be skeletal abnormalities that limit movement, the most extreme being the deformation or complete absence of the kneecap. Moreover, there may be a presence of iliac horns which are small, flaring protrusions on the pelvic bone that can sometimes be felt through the skin.

2.Cotard Delusion or “Walking Corpse Syndrome”

Cotard Delusion, otherwise known as walking corpse syndrome, is an extremely rare condition in which people wake up one day thinking that they have died, that they no longer exist, or that their flesh is rotting off. It’s all mental, of course, but there’s a physical cause nonetheless; the brain region involved in facial recognition has become disconnected from the regions involved in emotion. When the person looks in the mirror, they recognize themselves, but they don’t have the usual emotional response. Their appearance has lost its association with their sense of self, and this cognitive dissonance results in the sense that they do not exist, or have died.

3.Cold Urticaria, “Cold Allergy”

For those suffering from Cold Urticaria, contact to cold air or water can trigger a histamine reaction, just like an allergy to bees or peanuts. This can cause itchy hives and swelling in the affected areas. Those who have severe conditions can experience extreme swelling of the throat and tongue, which may be fatal.

4.Xeroderma Pigmentosum or “Vampire Syndrome”

Some people are more sensitive to the sun and its UV rays than others, and about one in one million people cannot handle any UV rays at all, known as Xeroderma Pigmentosum, or “Vampire Syndrome”. They have to be completely shielded from the sun at all times, or else they run the risk of severe sunburn and breakdown of the skin. They can also develop skin cancers more easily. People normally have enzymes that correct UV damage, but a genetic mutation causes these to malfunction in people with Xeroderma Pigmentosum. This disorder is often linked to neurological disorders.

5.Maggot infestation

This medical condition ranks as most repulsive, because disgust is designed by evolution to keep us away from parasites that may make us sick. People pick up on, and are most disgusted by, visual representations of a parasite invasion.

6.Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva or “Stone Man Syndrome”

This progressive genetic disorder turns muscle and soft tissue to bone over time. As kids develop into adults, they have a gene that turns cartilage into bone. When functioning properly, it also knows when to stop. Those with FOP don’t have that ability, so bone keeps developing inappropriately throughout their bodies. Trauma makes it worse, so unfortunately surgically removing excess bone material will cause the body produce more.

7.Hypertrichosis “Werewolf Syndrome”

Those who suffer from have abnormal hair growth covering their bodies. Faces can be completely covered in long hair, which is why the condition has earned the nickname of “Werewolf Syndrome.” Hypertrichosis can be either congenital or acquired. Those born with the condition can suffer from one of several known genetic mutations. Some who get the condition later in life acquired it as a side effect from anti-balding treatments, though there are some cases which do not have an obvious cause.

8.Body Integrity Identity Disorder

Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID) is a strange medical condition. Sufferers are totally sane, but feel as if their right foot is connected way up in the mid calf. . The limb feels horrific and alien, and they can usually point to the exact place where they desperately wish to have it removed. Because BIID sufferers are missing part of their body image map in their brains, their unwanted limb is not correctly mapped to the corresponding brain region, leaving them feeling extremely uncomfortable.

9.Progressive Lipodystrophy

Also known as reverse Benjamin Button syndrome, lipodystrophy sufferers look older than others their age. It can be inherited by a gene mutation, acquired through medications, autoimmune mechanisms, or other unidentified processes. Lipodystrophy is characterized by the loss of fat tissue from beneath the skin. It can cause to fat loss in the face, followed by the neck, upper extremities, and trunk which can cause dents, folds, and wrinkles in the skin.

10.Pica

Pica sufferers have an undeniable urge to eat non-food, often as a result of stress, mineral deficiency or pregnancy. The disease has many sub-categories, some weirder and more dangerous than others. It can also be used to describe people who eat chalk, feces, glass, mucus, paint, body parts, hair, urine, wood and more.
