Mitochondria In Details

Fig: Ultrastructure of  Mitochondria
Mitochondria was first discovered by Koliker.According to him Mitochondria is made up of mitos & chondrian. Here mitos means thread & chondrian means organell. Hence we can say that mitochondria is a thread like structure (organelle) present inside the cell.
Occurance
Mitochondria is the most prominent cellular structure . It is found in all eukyarotic cells except mature mammalian R.B.C and sieve tube but it can not be found in prokyarotic cells.
Shape & Size
It varies cell to cell. The shape might be oval shape ,sphere shape or like that .The biggest sized mitochondria is found in Toad(xenopus) & the  smallest one is found in yeast .
Position
It depends upon the functional state of organ.Metabolically active part contains large & high no.of mitochondria and inert part contains comparatively small and little no. of mitochondria.
Ultra structure
Mitochondria is double membrane bounded ,most prominent cellular structure. The inner membrane surrounds internal materials which is embedded in the Matrix .The inner membrane of mitochondria is protruded into numerous infolds  which is called cristae. The space between cristae is called inter cristae cavity and the space between inner membrane & outer membrane is called inner chamber . Inside the innermembrane we can found matrix in which 70s[1]type of ribosome, mitochondrial D.N.A[2],some lipids,R.N.A [3]& some other cell inclusions are found.Due to these raw materials mitochondria can form some of required proteins but for enough protein,it must depend upon other nuclear D.N.A and like that materials . This type of behavior shown by mitochondria is known as semi-autonomous nature of Mitochondria.
Functions of Mitochondria
®                      It is a power house of cell so it helps in the activities of energy & power.
®                      It produces & stores the energy in the form of A.T.P[4]
®                      It helps in the formation of some required protein
®                      It helps in the yolk formation during the development of ovum
®                      It forms the middle piece of sperm during  sperm maturation
®                      It takes a part in the cellular respiration
®                      It helps in the metabolic  activities
®                      It is a site of protein synthesis
®                      It distribute  the  stored  energy  to energy required organelle of area
®                      It makes the cell more active and helps  in  active performance ……e.t.c. J J
